ALPHA EPSILON PI AND THE BEN BERNSTEIN FUND

In 1995-96, I was privileged to serve as the 6oth International President (Supreme Master) of my college Fraternity, which I joined in 1966. Alpha Epsilon Pi was founded at New York University in 1913 as a Jewish fraternity. Today, Alpha Epsilon Pi has chapters at 140 campuses, and is widely known for its role in developing social consciousness and leadership skills among its members.

The Ben Bernstein Fund was established in memory of my father's cousin, a founding member of Chi Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi at Michigan State University in the late 1920's. Through the Alpha Epsilon Pi Foundation, this fund annually provides a Friday night (Shabbat) dinner for Jewish students and faculty at MSU Hillel, where I serve on the Board of Trustees.

In October, 2005, the dinner was dedicated in memory of Michael Henry Schwerner, hero of the American civil rights movement, who joined the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity at Michigan State in 1958. The event attracted approximately 250 guests. The plaque below was presented to Hillel by AEII, and is displayed at the Lester Morris Jewish Student Center in East Lansing.
